Brentwood TC Awards Evening

Last night we held our Annual Awards evening and were pleased to see so many of our members turn up to celebrate the Jack Petchey Achievement Award winners' success. It was also a great opportunity to thank Steven Nicholls for his six years service as Chairman by presenting him with the Jack Petchey Leader Award. Read more on our website here.

Minutes and Reports for AGM go online

In order to ensure that we do not spend too much party-time next Friday listening to annual reports we will be publishing them online on our website at http://www.brentwoodtc.org/reports.htm. Last years report and Minutes are already available and this years report will also be loaded there shortly. Please do read them in advance if possible and feel free to raise any questions you may have during the brief AGM.

Xmas Shopping

Just a quick heads up that it is possible not only to save yourselves some money whilst shopping online but you can also make money for the club at the same time.

You can do this by going to http://buy.at/brentwoodtc and linking to your preferred online retailer there. Depending on what you buy, this will result in the club receiving a commission payment that can be quite substantial in some cases (e.g. I recently renewed my car insurance through this site and saved £30 against my old renewal quote and made £55 for the club!) Top retailers on this site include M&S, Amazon, Game and many many more.

Party Time

Our Annual Xmas Party is taking place on December 4th at 7pm. We have a great disco playing for us with 'Jolly Jenny' offering karaoke opportunities, a variety of games and other entertainment as well.

As ever, we will ask adults, and older members who might be interested, to join us for a brief AGM whilst the younger members enjoy the fun - we normally manage to keep the AGM down to less than 20 minutes and all reports will be posted on-line in advance to help us achieve this. This will then be followed by presentation of medals to Jack Petchey Award winners and snacks. The bar will be open to paying customers.

This year, we are really keen to attract some new blood onto the committee with several vacancies including that of Chairman (Steven Nicholls is standing down after 6 years in the hot seat!) Any contribution to the committee (no matter how small) is truly welcome and we promise you will not be left high and dry!

Jack Petchey Winner - September

Congratulations to Annalie Collins for being the Jack Petchey winner for September. Pictured right is Annalie receiving her certificate and cheque from Jack Kelly, erstwhile National Squad Director, who just happened to be visiting us last night.

Annalie's award was a recognition of her steady development of skills and quiet unassuming character which saw her enter her first competition last month, get entered into the wrong grade, get moved into the correct group and then despite all that beating many much more experienced club-mates. Well done, Annalie and well-deserved.

Nominations for the October winner are now open, eligible members are listed on the notice board.

The "Flog It!" team pays a visit

Brentwood School & Brentwood Trampoline Club were pleased to welcome the BBC's Flog It! team recently with it's presenter Paul Martin. This popular antiques programme regularly includes a segment on some item of historical interest in the local area. Their interest had been stimulated by the history article on our club's website which showed how a local man, Ted Blake, made significant contributions to the development of competitive trampolining. All being well the show, which should be broadcast next year, will show Tim Blake (Ted's son) being interviewed in the school's library and Hannah McCann and Scott Gregory being interviewed and also performing for Paul in the Courage Hall. Apparently one of Paul's fond memories of his school-days features the school trampoline on which he recalls doing somersaults. Pictured are Tim, Scott, Paul & Hannah.

Results from Easton Grading

We had a long day on Sunday with some high emotions at times but some decent results. Three winners were Sophie Banks, Jospeh Dulieu-Hasler and Kallum Sherlock, four third-placed were Jonathan Gibbs, Jamie Perry, Abbie Goldmsith & Kensie Sherlock (Kensie on zero final) and although not making a podium position, Emma Martin qualified to grade F. Georgia Tyrrell also got closer to qualifying with two new PBs. Not too bad from thirteen competing on the day. More details on our website here.

Results from the 10th Brentwood Open

Well it's all over once again and we managed to finish pretty much on time and hopefully everybody who attended felt their visit was worth while. We had 233 entries by close of play (33 from our own club) from 18 clubs from as far as Norwich & Cambridge and as near as round the corner. The full set of results are being sent to all clubs and are also available on our website. In the meantime, a big thank you to all helpers and officials who helped the day run smoothly.

Thank You!

Our own members highlights are:

H & I Grades
We had quite a few new competitors competing in these grades and for many of them it was simply about experiencing a competition for the first time, these included Laura Bloomfield, Ruby Blandford, Rebekah Francis & Ellen Houghton - well done for stepping up to the plate.

G Grade
Our under-9/11 girls team of Emma Martin, Tegan Roycroft, Georgia Tyrrell and Jessie-Rose Durrell won their group with Emma also taking individual 3rd place. Jessie & Georgia were not far behind in 4th & 6th out of 15 competitors.

This team success was replicated with the under-13 girls, Fiona Humphries, Susanna Badley, Alice Gibbs & Emma Brereton with Susanna also taking individual 2nd closely followed by first-timer Annalie Collins in 4th and Alice Gibbs in 5th.

The next whiff of success we had was with the under-17 girls with Tilly Ashcroft and Catherine Zalicks taking individual 2nd and 3rd places. Emma Meadows (one of our regular adult bouncers) also competed for teh first time in the Over-17 and missed 2nd place on tie-break buit was pleased with 3rd, the winner of this group was Natalie Shade bouncing for Tiptree but also a regular visitor so well done to Natalie as well.

F Grade
Highlights in this grade were Abbie Goldsmith winning the under-15 on tie break and Charlotte Hussey in her first outing at this grade in 5th. Lauren Marchant was convincing winner in the Over 15.

E Grade
This grade saw another team success with Sophie Banks, Georgia Walker and Harriet Gill, Sophie narrowly missed a medal as well ending in 4th overall.

D Grade
A mixed result with Daniel Frost winning the male competition by a good margin but Emma Frost completing her new higher tariff vol but just not quite getting the form marks she needed to challenge in the female group.

C & above
This group saw Natasha Wood winning with Chrissie Law in 6th place.

There is more detail on our website.

Recognition - Brentwood Sports Awards

We were delighted, once again, to be invited to the Active Brentwood Sports Awards last Friday. We had two short-listed nominations and had also been reaffirmed as an Academy Club member and were there to receive a cheque in respect of that accreditation. Our club chairman, Steve Nicholls received the £500 cheque for us. Our short-listed nominations were for:
  • Young Sports Personality - Hannah McCann, nominated among other things for her successful defence of her National Title and representing East of England in last years Home Nations competition (Paul Kitchen attended on her behalf);
  • Services to Sport - Dave Kingaby, mainly nominated for his 16 years service with the club, and work undertaken with other Academy Clubs to develop and promote a joint website presence.
Both of these were successful in being rated as Highly Commended but, sadly, no trophies this year!

National Finals Report

Whilst many of us were heading away on our summer holidays, five of our members were heading to the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham for the British National Finals. All had qualified to be there during the year by achieving qualification through competition and this grand gala event was the culmination of their competition year.

Full details of their successes and disappointments are on our website now - click here to read the full report. In summary though:
  • Hannah McCann won the Under-15 National C competition with Charlotte Webb in the same group finishing 23rd following a slip in her vol;
  • Stephen Page came 4th in the Under-19 FIG B competition with Scott Gregory (recovering from flu) simply running out of steam in his vol and finishing in 30th place;
  • Chrissie Law ended in 59th place in the Under-19 National C.

Cancelled sessions 24-27 August

There will be no trampolining sessions taking place on week-commencing 24th August. We apologise to all our members and guests for this short notice which was entirely outside our control. Reduced rate membership offer

As members will be aware, we are one of the select few clubs in the Brentwood area who are members of the Brentwood Academy Club scheme which is run by the council to recognise clubs of excellence.

In order to recognise this further the Brentwood Leisure Trust has recently announced a reduced rate of membership at the Brentwood Centre for all members of Academy Clubs.

This means you could enjoy unlimited use of the gym, aerobics classes, the swimming pool and all the racquet sports for just £25 a month (normally £35). Joining in August gives an added bonus with the first 6 weeks for the price of 4!

Summer dangers

With google showing a marked increase in searches for trampolines over May and June it is likely that many parents are considering buying garden trampolines thinking of the hours that will be whiled away for their kids over the long holiday. For many, though, many hours may also be whiled away in A&E departments with one Scottish hospital recently having reported treating nearly ten injuries a week over a 6-week study period!

Brentwood Tampline Club recently issued an announcement to local newspapers giving advice on this subject - read it on our website here.

First Pegasus Open Results

What a great half day this was for some of our keener young members. Held at the Gainsborough Sports centre in Ipswich this competition focussed on the lower Club and Regional grades and our members came away with a nice haul of trophies. With just 10 members making it there on the day all bar 2 came away with a trophy or medal and those who didn't were pleased with their performances.

To find out more and get full results visit our website here.

South Shields Gala Weekend Results

Good work by Charlotte Webb at South Shields saw her reaffirm her position in the top ranks of the Youth Girls National C competition this year. Following a disappointing set round where she was half-way down the field she made a great recovery and just missed a podium position in 4th place overall. Read more on our website here.

Mainly positive results from this weekend (25th - 26th April) with only one slip.

The only slip came with Hannah McCann, going into the vol in 4th place, adding an extra move at the end and missing her first ever final at this level.

Help needed

As I hope you are all aware we are holding our Open Competition to raise funds for Georgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal this Sunday, 19th April. Lots of work has already been going behind the scenes organising this event and now is the time when you can add your support. There are four main ways you can do this:-

1) Saturday Night, 8pm - Help put out mats (the coaches will do the trampolines) and move chairs and staging to set up the hall for the competition. There is a lot to do and you don’t need to be particularly big and strong. There will be an opportunity for the youngsters to practice a routine or two before you go.

2) Second Hand Leotards - We are having a sale of second hand leotards with half the proceeds going to the GTCA and half for you. Please bring your leotards along early on Sunday morning or down to the club beforehand. Make sure you securely attach an envelope to the (clean) leotard with your name and how much you want it to sell for written on the outside. You could also come and buy one!

3) Raffle Prizes - Have you got some unwanted gifts lying around that could be somebody else's treasure. Why not donate it to the raffle (please note that if we receive lots of prizes we may hold some over to our next competition)?

4) Sunday - We need lots of help to actually run the competition on Sunday. So if you are able to do any of the following, even for an hour or so (but longer’s even better), please let me know which you would prefer to do, or just and volunteer on the day, we will be there from around 9 o'clock onwards and there are always odd jobs to be done:-

a) Sell leotards/programs/etc
b) Make refreshments for judges
c) Warm-up marshal or similar
d) Clear up at the end - we need lots of help here, lots of chairs need moving as well as mats, staging and trampolines.

If you do nothing else, please come and support us on Sunday and bring some money to spend!

A new member?

Congratulations to Sarah & Scott on the birth of a new sister for Lauren in the early hours of Monday. She weighed in at 6lb 12oz (just over 3 bags of sugar for those of the metric persuasion) and has yet to be named.

(Note the picture is not of Sarah's newly-born but we expect to see one similar soon!)

UPDATE - We have just been informed baby is now named - 'Fay Louise'

Competitions update

On the 15th March Anthony Williams travelled to Newtownards just outside Belfast to compete in the National C competition in the Irish Gala Weekend. The results website has pretty much been offline ever since and so we have not been able to get a detail result but we do know he came 2nd - well done Anthony!

Last weekend saw 16 of our members competing at the regional grading competition at Harlow, 11 of them at Regional G. With only four out of one hundred grade G entries qualifying to Grade F it is no surprise that few of our members achieved personal best scores although first-timers Tilly Ashcroft, Jonathan Gibb and Callum Wylie performed creditably. In other respects we did have some success stories with:
  • Abbie Goldsmith and Charlotte Hussey taking 3rd and 4th places in the 26-strong under-15 girls Grade G;
  • Jamie Perry coming 2nd in the under-15 boys Grade G;
  • Joe Dulieu-Hasler also coming 2nd in his first outing at Under-13 boys Grade F; and
  • Both Emma & Daniel Frost reaching finals in the over-15 Grade D (girls and boys respectively of course) and each posting 2 new personal bests with Dan also just missing on a trophy in 4th place!
Several others also saw good improvements in their overall ranking.

Upcoming weeks will see us hosting a special competition in support of Georgia's Teenage Cancer Appeal (see our main website for more details) and our national competiotors travelling to Cardiff for the Gala Weekend there on 25th-26th April.

New website

Some of you will already know that our website is in the middle of a 'Makeover'. The new site is substantially complete bar a large number of formatting inconsistencies that are being ironed out before it goes live. If you would like to see the new site in its Beta-version please visit the site at http://new.brentwoodtc.org/.

Any constructive comment welcomed - talk to Dave.

Georgia's Teenage Cancer Appeal

Together with the other trampoline clubs in Brentwood we are pleased to be supporting this appeal which is the brainchild of Georgia Cordery (13) who is herself suffering from a rare form of cancer.  The main focus of our collective efforts is an extra Open Competition which we will be hosting at BSSC on 19th April.  You can find out more about this competition on our website here but, in the meantime, we are appealing for any help we can get to maximise the donation.  If you are able to help in any way either by providing services, raffle prizes, or plain simple money, please contact either of the following:
  • Dave Kingaby or Olive Law in Brentwood TC,
  • Zoe Wilson in Levitation or
  • Janet Hay in Recoil Twisters.
Thanks in anticpation of your support.

Jack Petchey - January Winner

The winner for January was very deserving following a couple of months in which she has worked very hard on her performance and form and is now showing some considerable promise. Well done to Rebecca Martin!

Tuesday, 24 February 2009

Southern Gala

Held at Burgess Hill on 21st/22nd February we had four competing here and results were a big improvement over Cocks Moor Woods.

Stephen Page and Scott Gregory competed in the under 19 FIG B and went into the 'zero-final' in 4th and 1st place respectively securing both promotion points and their place in national finals. Unfortunately Stephen didn't finish his final vol and so ended in 8th place but Scott continued to focus well on strong form on a much-reduced tariff and performed well enough to take 2nd place.

The under 15 National C competition with Hannah McCann and Charlotte Webb was over 60 strong so reaching finals was a big ask. Charlotte did a near-repeat of her West Midlands scores, securing a second qualifying score for nationals, and was placed 11th overall, Hannah was 1st placed after preliminaries with both finals qualification and a promotion point in the bag, the zero final, however, saw her pipped at the post by 0.5 to take 2nd place.

Tuesday, 3 February 2009

West Midlands Gala

Held in Cocks Moor Woods on 31st January and 1st February this competition saw only 3 of our members competing - Charlotte Webb in the under 15 National C grade and Stephen Page and Scott Gregory in the under 19 FIG B. This was a disappointing competition for both boys with neither making the final or achieving finals qualification but Charlotte did somewhat better qualifying to National Finals and just missing a final round place on tie-break.

Trampolining back to normal tonight - thaw't it would be OK

Although Brentwood School is closed today (in common with many schools locally) we have now confirmed that the Sports Centre WILL be open this evening and so we will be open as usual for our trampoline sessions.

See you there.

S'no joke - training IS cancelled tonight

We have now been advised that the Sports Centre will be closed this evening in order to ensure that staff are able to make their way home safely.  Training is therefore cancelled tonight.  Please check back here again tomorrow if you also train on Tuesday.

ECGA Regional Awards

The club was recently surprised to learn that it had been nominated for an Eastern Counties Gymnastics Association annual award.

To date we are still not sure who it was that nominated us but the icing was certainly put on the cake when we received a certificate for being "Small Club of 2008" because of our success in "getting gymnasts selected for international competition as well as providing general classes for the community", together with a cheque for £100.

Scott at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival

Scott Gregory is one of the young future Olympians representing Team GB in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) this week. Time lags and cost of telephone calls mean we have been getting little information back but there are some reports and interviews online as follows:
  • Interview with Scott and his trampolining partner Steven Williams - click here;
  • Report on the opening ceremony with Scott pictured top left (also shown on the right on this blog) - click here;
The actual trampoline competition takes part on 17th January, still a couple of days away.  As and when more reports become available I will link them in from here.

Hitchin Grading

This grade G - D competition held on 11th January saw 16 of our members travelling to Hitchin with traces of snow still on the ground and the inside of the hall didn't get much warmer - fortunately our members' performances were good and warmed us all up.
  • Antony Wyman, O15M G, came 1st and qualified to E,
  • Abbie-Jo Goldsmith, U15F G, came 2nd (of 27!) and also qualified to E,
  • Jamie Perry, U15M G, came 2nd,
  • Kendra Sherlock (14th), Megan Gannon (10th), Victoria Webb (11th) & Georgia Tyrell (21st), U13F G, took team 1st against 3 other teams in this large, 2-flight, group whilst Tegan Roycroft in the same group overcame her mid-week gremlins to end in 12th place,
  • Joseph Dulieu-Hasler, U13M G, came 2nd,
  • Lizzie Nicholls, O15F E, came 7th,
  • Mark Hardiman, O15M E, came 6th scoring a new PB,
  • Kallum Sherlock, U15M E, came 2nd
  • Chrissie Law and Emma Frost, O15F D, came 1st and 6th,
  • Daniel Frost, O15M D, came 2nd with two new PBs and a qualification point,
  • Kensie Sherlock, U15F D, came 3rd.
Detail scores etc... are on our website here.
